Copper-alloy Axe

The exact origins of this copper-alloy axe were unknown, but it was found by a metal detector on the island of Langeland (Denmark). As it is a unique object, it was treated irrespective of its unknown contexts. The dirt was removed with a stiff brush and wooden stick so as not to remove the remaining patinated surface. The after photos were taken at this stage and the axe was placed into a cabinet with silica gel and carefully monitored relative humidity. At a later date, it was treated by another conservator with 3% BTA and 10% Paraloid B72 in ethanol before being put into storage with less environmental controls. This is just one example of many copper-alloy archaeological objects that I have treated over the years.
