Arabian Dagger

Arabian dagger with scabbard made of a stamped and beaten brass from Durham University Oriental Museum. The handle of the dagger is made of wood wrapped in the stamped and beaten brass, with a small nickel plated coin with Arabic writing attached to the handle by a loop of wire. The coin dates to 1327 AH (Hijri calendar), which runs from 23 January 1909 to the 12 January 1910 in the Gregorian calendar. The dagger itself may be earlier than the coin suggests. The blade is curved, and is made of steel. The scabbard is made of the same stamped and beaten brass wrapped around two pieces of wood. A belt loop is soldered to the back (this may be a later addition). The dagger was stuck in the scabbard and the brass had copper corrosion in the stamped areas. The main aim of the conservation was to remove the blade from the scabbard, and to stabilise the object for long-term storage. Many different methods were tested, before one was successful.
